It's no secret that the High Museum of Art houses one of the most impressive collections of art in the world. But what is a surprise to many is the museum's array of offerings. It starts with paintings, pictures, murals and sculptures, but there's a lot more to love about the High.
"Part of the experience is also the programs that we offer," Julie Delliquanti told Nelson's News. "There are things for families. There are things for teens. We have all types of programming around the exhibitions, so there's something for everybody."
The top attraction at the museum currently is "Frida and Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting." The exhibition pairs together 120 works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera chronologically and according to themes, including maternity, Mexican identity and portraiture. While the exhibition positions the artists' work in the political and artistic contexts of their time, "Frida & Diego" also examines the ways their work continues to influence Mexican artists, with two Frida and Diego-inspired reading rooms designed by award-winning contemporary Mexican designers Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena.
Atlanta’s High Museum of Art is the sole U.S. venue for “Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting." It's on display through May 12.
The best time to check out the exhibit depends on what else is of interest.
The High Museum offers Friday Jazz the third Friday of every month. If the musical arts via the saxophone, piano or trumpet is of interest, that's the best time to check it out. Headed to the High Museum with a family? Consider stopping by on a Sunday.
"Every Sunday through the run of the show, we have Sunday art adventures here," Delliquanti said. "Families can come. It's open 12-5 p.m. (There are) art activities, workshops, there are bilingual tours of the exhibition, so it's a great time for families to come and bring their kids and be able to see the show with other families around."
For others, Thursday nights might be the time to check it out. The museum offers Thirsty Thursdays that includes discounted admission and cocktails. There are films, lectures, teen nights and tweetups, too.
