For the second year in a row, the effort to expand gun rights in Georgia will come down to the last day of the legislative session. So will the fate of several other hotly debated bills.
The Senate may still consider House Bill 772 (drug testing for public assistance) and House Bill 714 (bus drivers and other employees banned from claiming unemployment during school breaks). Senate leaders also face a decision on whether to push for full privatization of Georgia's child welfare services or accept a House compromise for a two-year pilot program. And, of course, they still face a decision on House Bill 60, a major expansion of gun rights in Georgia.
The House has just four bills on the calendar, including SB 343, which requires changes to how the Georgia High School Athletic Association members are chosen but it was also amended to include HB 897, the major Title 20 education code rewrite bill that includes several key charter school provisions. Much of the day will be spent deciding how to respond to bill changes made by the Senate, and conference committee reports.
The Moral Monday folks are holding a 10 am presser at Ebenezer Baptist Church. No word on whether they try for 40 on 40 (following 39 arrests on Day 39).
The House gavels in at 9:30 a.m; the Senate at 10 a.m.
