Jarrett Laws is being forced out as Griffin's head football coach after two seasons, Laws confirmed to The Crescent Buzz on Monday.

Laws’ teams were 11-1 and 6-5. Laws took over after Griffin went 15-0 and won its first state championship since 1978.

Laws acknowledged to Gabriel Stovall of The Crescent Buzz that he and new principal Darrell Evans, who had come from Sandy Creek, did not have a comfortable relationship.

“I would say there was probably a rift in communication from the beginning,” Laws said. “I’m a very self-reflective person and never one to try to push blame in any one direction. But I was told Friday by Dr. Evans that I was a good guy, but just not his guy.”

Griffin has not announced the change.

Laws previously had been a head coach at Drew, where he started the program in 2009, and Mount Zion-Jonesboro, which he led to the quarterfinals in 2008.

Griffin’s previous coach, Steve DeVoursney, was 128-35 in 13 seasons. He resigned after the state-title season following a months-long probe into alleged academic misconduct and recruiting involving student-athletes. DeVoursney, now head coach at Cairo, denied wrongdoing.
