Two of the 11 longest opening-game winning streaks in GHSA history ended last week. Buford and Carver of Columbus each had won 17 consecutive openers. That is, they had never lost an opening game this century until Buford lost to Roswell 24-7 and Carver lost to Opelika, Ala., 34-7. Northside of Warner Robins extended its opening-game winning streak to 20 with a 55-3 victory over Warner Robins. The record belongs to Mary Persons, which won 30 straight from 1972 to 2001. Valdosta went 49-1 in opening games from 1950 to 1999, losing only to 1973 Class AAA champion Thomasville 6-0.
