Symphony plans free outdoor concerts
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has announced that it will return to Piedmont Park for three free summer concerts. The “Performance on the Promenade” concert series — 7:30 p.m. June 11, 18 and 25 — will be presented at the Promenade site in the park’s northeast corner.
ASO Assistant Conductor Joseph Young will lead all three programs. The June 11 concert will include Dvořák's Slavonic Dance No. 7 and Symphony No. 8, movement IV and Bizet's "Danse Bohemienne" from Carmen. The June 18 concert will feature Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld Overture, Ravel's Pavane and Stravinsky's The Firebird Suite. The June 25 concert will include selections from Elgar, Grieg, Anderson, Falla and Brahms.
The ASO is partnering with Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and the Piedmont Park Conservancy to bring back what interim CEO and president Terry Neal called “a beloved Atlanta tradition.” The orchestra has performed more than 100 free concerts at the park since late maestro Robert Shaw conducted the first program there in 1976.
While free, tickets for general admission seating are required. Tickets for the June 11 performance will be available online at 10 a.m. June 5; June 18 tickets will be available at 10 a.m. June 12; and June 25 tickets will be available at 10 a.m. June 19. A maximum of six tickets per person can be reserved online at ticketmaster.com.

The Woodruff Arts Center recently announced the election of 20 new members to the organization’s Board of Trustees, one of the largest classes of new trustees in the center’s history.

Woodruff Arts Center trustees serve for up to two (3-year) terms and may be re-elected following a one-year sabbatical.

Joining the Arts Center’s 18-member Governing Board for 2015-16 are: Kirk Jamieson, VP & General Counsel, South Area, Verizon Wireless, as Chairman of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors; Doug Franklin, Executive Vice President & CFO, Cox Enterprises, Inc. as Compensation and Human Resources Committee Chair; and Juanita Baranco, Vice President & COO, Mercedes Benz of Buckhead as an At-Large Member. In addition, Dr. Elizabeth Kiss, President of Agnes Scott College, and James W. Boswell, Partner at King & Spalding, will be co-chairing the Arts Center’s Education Board.
