U is for Undergrads
There are 22 seniors on Georgia State’s football team.
Of that group, at least 11 are likely starters and most of the remainder will be key backups.
So, doing some math, that means that the remaining 11 starters and key backups are undergrads.
This is close to the kind of roster balance that Miles has been working toward since taking over the program following the 2012 season.
There are two ways of looking at the number of seniors in key positions.
Here’s the first: The Panthers must win this year because the team will lose 11 senior starters and 8-9 more key backups. That’s a lot of experience, stats and leadership that will walk away from MLK Drive.
Here’s the second: The coaches have at least 12 games to give those players who are expected to step in for those seniors the chance to earn meaningful snaps this season. That’s important because this could be the most meaningful senior class in history if Georgia State can build on last year by posting its first winning season as an FBS-level team. If they can accomplish that, they will obviously want the next group to continue to build.
