Steve Spurrier has overhauled South Carolina’s roster and added a co-defensive coordinator after last year’s 7-6 season that included the Gamecocks’ first loss to Clemson in six years.
And now he said he’ll be calling all the offensive plays this fall in a season in which the Gamecocks must replace QB Dylan Thompson and RB Mike Davis.
Spurrier attempted to delegate the play calling last season.
No longer.
"I plan to be the play-caller again," he told the The Charleston Post and Courier. "I did delegate at times last year, but I usually took over before the game was over. But I certainly plan on doing it, and I'll be ready to do it, and go from there."
He second-guessed himself at times last year and then second-guessed others in the loss to Clemson.
“Same reason I did several years ago — it wasn’t going very well,” he said when asked why he delegated the playcalling last season. “Same reason Mike McCarthy says he’s going to delegate, the Green Bay coach. You make a bad call and you say, ‘Aw, dumb—, why did I do that? Maybe somebody else can do it better.’ And then you realize it’s not necessarily the play call, it’s just what happens.”
Spurrier said he’ll be open to ideas from his assistants.
“We’re always doing that. I’ve done that since I’ve been here, take suggestions here and there, especially on the run game, at times,” he said. “But not always. Not always. I listen to them, but I don’t always go with the suggestions, which is expected.”
