A strong cold front set to sweep across metro Atlanta on Wednesday will bring heavy rain and gusty winds that could topple trees, forecasters warned Tuesday.

A flood watch goes into effect Wednesday morning for metro Atlanta and the rest of North Georgia. The flood watch is in effect through Thursday morning north of a line that stretches from Franklin to Covington to Washington.

A wind advisory went into effect beginning at 10 p.m. Tuesday for much of metro Atlanta, Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said.

The wind advisory, calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph, is in effect until 1 p.m. Wednesday for areas of the state north of a line that stretches from Carrollton to Canton to Cleveland.

Forecasters are predicting 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain across metro Atlanta and the rest of North and Middle Georgia before tapering off Thursday.

A few thunderstorms could also be embedded in the rain, according to Minton, who said the chance of rain is 100 percent Wednesday, diminishing to a 70 percent chance Thursday morning.

Afternoon highs will be in the mid-60s through Thursday and low 60s Friday, with morning lows in the 50s through Thursday and mid-40s Friday.

The weekend will start off cool but sunny, with highs Saturday only in the mid-50s after morning lows in the upper 30s, Minton said.
