After missing the 2017 season with a foot injury, Georgia Tech linebacker David Curry received an additional season of eligibility from the NCAA. Tech and Curry received word from the NCAA on Thursday.
Curry, expected to be a starter for the Yellow Jackets this season, was to be a senior this season, but is now considered a junior eligibility-wise. Should he exercise the extra season, he would be a senior in 2020, his sixth year with the team. Curry redshirted his first season with the team, in 2015. He missed the 2017 season after fracturing a metatarsal in his right foot in the preseason, requiring season-ending surgery.
“I would just like to thank all of the Georgia Tech staff that has helped me thus far,” Curry said in a statement. “Special thanks to GT sports medicine and compliance for always being of great help. I’m extremely excited to be able to stay at this great Institute and remain a member of this special football team for an additional year.”
Curry was a starter in 2018, finishing sixth on the team with 47 tackles along with an interception and a fumble recovery, which he returned for a touchdown.
“I’m happy for David and for our entire organization because we will now have another year with an outstanding player and leader on the field and in the locker room,” coach Geoff Collins said in a statement.
The NCAA’s decision bodes well for quarterback Lucas Johnson, whose circumstances are similar to Curry’s and who is a candidate for an additional season of eligibility. Johnson redshirted his first season on campus, in 2016, then missed the 2018 season when he suffered a season-ending foot injury in the preseason. Johnson is a junior going into the 2019 season.
