Braves quotes from manager Fredi Gonzalez, Andrelton Simmons and Julio Teheran after Friday’s 5-0 loss to the Mets.
FREDI GONZALEZ
On Julio Tehran’s one mistake
“One pitch. Usually, I think I’m a broken record here, if your starter gives us two runs you have a chance to win the game. We didn’t score runs so those two runs they hang on Julio are big. He pitched good. (Lucas) Duda’s a dangerous guy, a big, strong guy. He hit it out of the ball park. We had it at two and you want to keep it at two and bring one of your top relievers in there just to keep it at two and give yourself a chance to score a run or two or tie the game against their bullpen in the ninth inning. They ended up getting three add-on runs.”
On lack of run support not bothering Teheran
“That is the way you have to do it. His job is to get people out. He doesn’t have to worry about driving in runs. I’ve been really proud of all our starters because it seems like every single night, it’s almost the same story. Per man, none of them have pointed fingers at anybody. They go out there and keep doing their job. Hopefully, things will turn and we’ll start scoring some runs.”
On lack of two-out hits
“Look at the numbers. I know guys look at the numbers. I know this is our 15th shutout. I don’t know how many games we’ve played and only scored one run. You get missed opportunities and it comes back to bite you every single time.”
On Simmons’ offensive night
“After taking him out of the game Wednesday with the bad ankle, with him it’s day-to-day. Tomorrow he might go out there and his first run to first base might bite him a little bit and we have to worry about it. To come back and get three hits and run the bases a little bit you feel we can finish the season with him playing shortstop.”
On what he says to team with playoff hopes dwindling
“As long as there is a number beside you, you have to keep playing and hang on. They know. They know. I don’t think you need to remind anybody what’s at stake on what we can accomplish if we start winning games, start swinging the bats.”
ANDRELTON SIMMONS
On whether this is toughest stretch for team
“Oh yeah. It seems like it’s really hard to get runs on the board right now. It’s frustrating.”
On his health
“I felt OK. Not great. But at the end of the day, its wins and losses that count right now. You go home not feeling good.”
On Teheran’s performance
“He pitched great. That was the only costly mistake he made. We didn’t help him offensively.”
On fading playoff hopes
“It’s tough. It’s really tough. You just have to take it one at-bat at a time, one play at a time and hope for the best. It’s really frustrating right now.”
JULIO TEHERAN
On allowing home run to Lucas Duda
“I was trying to do my best and hold them the whole time. It was just one mistake that cost me two runs and cost us the game.”
On whether it was bad pitch or bad location
“It was the pitch that I wanted. I don’t know how he hits changeups, but he got me right there. That is part of the luck that I have.”
On lack of run support
“I’m just trying not to let it affect me at all. It’s kind of difficult for us to try to win games. We are just trying to do our best but things aren’t going like we wanted. It’s kind of tough.”
