Atlanta United is in advanced discussions to sign goalkeeper Josh Cohen, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.
Cohen, a 31-year-old native of California, was most recently at Maccabi Haifi in Israel. He is no longer under contract. ESPN first reported that the two parties were discussing a deal.
Cohen has 262 appearances as a professional, with the majority (161) at Maccabi Haifi. He has played in the USL but has never played in the MLS. He has 12 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
Cohen’s agent accused Atlanta United of bad-faith negotiations earlier this summer. MLS said the club didn’t violate any rules and provided a genuine offer to the player.
If signed, Cohen is expected to compete with Brad Guzan to be the starting goalkeeper. Guzan, 39, has yet to announce if he is returning for next season. He is under contract through the 2024 season. There is an option for 2025.
