It's hip to be square at Dunkin' Donuts, as the chain runs headfirst into September with its new Pumpkin Cheesecake Squares and Reese's Peanut Butter Squares.
Some might argue that filled donuts are more dessert than breakfast, but others disagree. Take a look at what one newspaper staff had to say about the new releases.
Pumpkin Cheesecake Squares: This donut boasts pumpkin cheesecake filling, orange icing, a graham cracker crumb topping and a white icing drizzle.
An editor: "It was only faintly pumpkin-y, but good. The cream was my favorite. Smooth and silky. The orange frosting was good but just tasted like frosting, and I like the brown sprinkles on top but don't know what they were made of. The donut had the consistency of a cake."
A travel columnist: "This tasted like fall to me, and called to mind those days when trick-or-treaters were invited into homes and offered doughnuts and cider. (Those days are long gone now!) I didn't find a strong pumpkin flavor – though the orange icing gives it a festive, seasonal look. I did like the spicy taste (pumpkin spice, maybe?) and the glazed doughnut component."
A police-report writer: "If I was creating a pumpkin donut for Dunkin', I'd make a pumpkin cake donut with more spices like nutmeg."
Reese's Peanut Butter Square: Filled with peanut butter buttercreme, this donut is topped with chocolate icing and an orange icing drizzle. In other words, it's candy masquerading as cake.
A digital manager: "The donut had excellent peanut butter taste. The flavor reminded me exactly of the filling from a Reese's cup. I felt it fell a little short when it came to the chocolate flavor though. Injecting some chocolate as filling or maybe using a chocolate-flavored donut might have helped here. Overall grade: B."
A social media producer: "It was quite tasty, actually. The peanut filling was exactly what I'd expect from a donut inspired by my favorite candy cup. But I'd say it was a little light on the chocolate. Still, would I order one myself? With a huge glass of whole milk, absolutely!"
A social media manager: "I wish it tasted MORE like a peanut butter cup. … I dig the peanut butter filling, that's good. It was delicious. But the doughnut flavor seems to overpower anything else, which almost negates the moniker of the doughnut: Peanut butter cup."
If these squares don’t float your boat, Dunkin’ restocked its shelves with pumpkin favorites on Monday: pumpkin coffee and lattes, pumpkin donuts and Munchkins, and pumpkin muffins.
