More than 1,000 people voted, and the results are in; Zoo Atlanta's new clouded leopard has a name.

Suhana

It's a Hindi female name meaning beautiful or lovely.

Voters had four names to choose from: Suhana, submitted by the zoo’s carnivore keeper team; Nanda, a Burmese female name meaning rejoice; Thiri, a Burmese female name meaning splendor; and Rukai, the name of a Taiwanese indigenous people who revered the clouded leopard.

Born March 13, 2014, at Miami Metrozoo, Suhana arrived at Zoo Atlanta in late 2014. She began making appearances in her habitat in the zoo's complex carnivores exhibit earlier this year.

Little is known about clouded leopard populations in the wild, mostly because of their characteristic reclusiveness.

Native to Southeast Asia, the species is classified as vulnerable but faces declines as a result of habitat destruction and hunting for their skins.

Two of the countries in their range, Borneo and Sumatra, are now facing some of the most rapid rates of deforestation on the planet.

Visit Suhana and other wildlife from around the world Saturday, May 16, for Endangered Species Day. Visit zooatlanta.org for tickets and event details.
