Q: Where does a military veteran get a new ID card in the Atlanta area? Some businesses give a discount to military veterans, and my husband’s card is old and worn. Where can it be renewed?

A: To obtain a free veteran's ID card, veterans must first provide proof of qualifying service and residency to a Georgia Department of Veterans Service field service office. The office will verify and provide a Certificate of Eligibility. Then the certificate and required identification documents must be taken to a Georgia Department of Driver Services office, which issues the free ID card.

The ID documents include a birth certificate or passport, a Social Security card and two documents showing residential address, according to the Veterans Service website. Name change documentation also is required, if applicable.

“A veteran who meets the eligibility and residency requirements for a free veteran’s driver’s license and still cannot obtain one may be eligible for a free veteran’s ID card. A veteran is not eligible for a Georgia ID card if in possession of a valid driver’s license from another state,” the Georgia Department of Veterans Service website states.

Veterans Service field service offices in the metro area include the James H. “Sloppy” Floyd Veterans Memorial Building in downtown Atlanta and Trinka Davis Veterans Village Clinic in Carrollton.
