Q: What documents do you need to get your driver’s license? Do you need a birth certificate?
—Eddie Webster, Douglasville
A: You need several forms of ID to renew your driver’s license in Georgia, including one from the following:
An original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate/amended birth certificate, a U.S. Passport, a certificate of citizenship or other proof of citizenship, including a certificate of naturalization.
Proof of your Social Security number, which can include your Social Security card, a W-2 form with your name and number and a 1099 form with your name and number, among other forms.
Two documents that provide proof of residence. These can include a utility bill, a bank statement, an unexpired Georgia driver’s license, permit, ID card with your current residential address or other documents – issued within the past two years — including a paycheck or paycheck stub, a letter from your employer on company letterhead, a W-2 for earnings or military orders issued within the last two years.
If your name has changed, you will need additional documentation.
A Georgia driver’s license or ID card can be renewed up to 150 days prior to the expiration date or if the license has not been expired for more than two years. For more information and a full list of accepted documents, go to dds.ga.gov/secureid/accepteddocs.aspx.
