A state lawmaker shot Thursday during a robbery in Columbus is recuperating at home, but questions surrounding the incident remain.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that state Rep. Gerald Greene, R-Cuthbert, was shot in the leg during a robbery and was treated at a Columbus hospital. He was released later Thursday.
Initial reports from Speaker David Ralston’s office were that Greene had stopped for gas on his way from Atlanta to his home in Randolph County. Ralston spokesman Kaleb McMichen said Friday his statement “was based on preliminary reports our office received immediately following the incident.”
According to a Columbus police incident report, Greene was robbed at 3:10 p.m. in a parking lot at 3009 Victory Drive, home of Foxes Cinema, an adult book and video store. The only thing stolen was Greene’s iPhone, the report says.
Greene told police he was robbed by a male about 5 feet 5 inches tall who was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants, according to the incident report. The robber was carrying a silver .22-caliber pistol.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing, Columbus police said.
Greene told WRBL, a Columbus CBS affiliate, that he parked behind Foxes Cinema to visit an adjacent liquor store.
After he was shot behind the video store, Greene hobbled into the liquor store for help. Greene told the station he was carrying thousands of dollars in donations to help victims of last weekend’s storms in South Georgia.
Greene is in his 34th year in the House and is chairman of the State Properties Committee.
