A Rockdale County sheriff’s deputy made an unusual find as he arrested a Conyers man on drug charges: a two-foot sword was reportedly stashed in the man’s pants.

According to an incident report dated Aug. 5, the officer saw Ryan Paul Coleman, 37, walking in the middle of Cowan Road around 10:30 p.m. Coleman was reportedly waving his arms in the air and the officer thought the man was in distress.

After a rapid and incoherent conversation with Coleman, the officer searched him when he could not produce his identification, according to the report. The officer wrote that he saw what appeared to be a glass pipe inside the man’s waistband, but when he asked Coleman about it, a struggle ensued. After the officer placed Coleman in handcuffs, a search of his person turned up a second glass pipe and the sword, according to the report. The sword was hanging from the man’s waistband, down the inside of his pants leg, the officer wrote.

There was a small amount of methamphetamine in one of the pipes and burned residue in the bottom of the other, the report indicates. Coleman was arrested on charges of possession and use of drug-related objects, possession of a controlled substance and obstruction of an officer.

Coleman remains in the Rockdale County Jail in lieu of a $16,700 bond.
