Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory’s former residence near the Cathedral of Christ the King in Buckhead is at the center of a brewing dispute between some neighbors and the church.
A lawyer for the Archdiocese of Atlanta is accusing some residents of violating the Fair Housing Act after they complained about plans to create additional housing for as many as six priests at the house on West Wesley Road. The home is in Atlanta’s Peachtree Heights West neighborhood.
A lawyer for a handful of residents argues that Christ the King’s plans violate city zoning ordinances by creating a dormitory in a historic neighborhood of single-family homes.
If the two sides cannot compromise, says the residents’ lawyer, the matter could go to court. That would be the latest development in a controversy that came to light last month when some parishioners questioned the use of millions to build a new mansion for the archbishop as well as renovate his former residence. The money for those projects came from the will of Joseph Mitchell, nephew of “Gone With the Wind” author Margaret Mitchell.
