How will OSD help failing students?
I have a couple of questions about the Opportunity School District. Those supporting it have faith that the governor can fix schools. If the governor knows so much about fixing schools, why doesn’t he share that knowledge with the Department of Education so they could fix schools, or he could share it with us so we would know what we’re voting on? If he’s relying on creating charter schools, I wonder if he knows that nationwide only 17 percent are doing better than neighborhood schools. Also, is he going to turn those charter schools over to for-profit companies at a time when we know that for-profit companies have been disastrous for prisons and hospitals? The problem is, we don’t know what he wants to do except that it involves taking tax money from school districts. Everyone wants to help students achieve, but where is the plan for making it happen?

Hillary Clinton deserves our respect
In reply to the Oct. 6 letter, “Hillary not the best role model for girls:” Really? The writer seems to blame Hillary for the Monica Lewinsky scandal. I thought blaming the victim went out a long time ago.
One would have to look far and wide to find a better role model for women than Hillary Clinton. She has spent her entire life in public service. Her role as First Lady gave her insight to life in the Oval Office. She served as senator for eight years, and as Secretary of State visited more countries than any other person (112 countries). She championed the rights of women in China, and as senator guided Children’s Health Insurance Program through Congress. She also helped negotiate a cease-fire with Hamas. She has been a hard-working public servant who deserves our respect – if not our vote.
