If the United Nations ever needs a translator for reality TV sensation Honey Boo Boo it should look no further than Atlanta’s own “Talkmaster,” Neal Boortz.
The cast of the "The Bert Show," which was broadcasting live from a Dallas hotel , nabbed the syndicated "The Neal Boortz Show" host as he was passing through Friday morning.
Boortz, Bert Weiss and his fellow “Bert Show” cast members from Atlanta were in Texas for the annual National Association of Broadcaster’s convention.
During a segment titled “What the Hell Is Honey Boo Boo Saying?” Jeff Dauler of “The Bert Show” dashed over to Boortz as he walked nearby and persuaded him to join the little on-air competition.
While Weiss, Dauler and fellow co-hosts Jenn Hobby and Kristin Klingshirn may have been stumped trying to figure out what Honey Boo Boo, whose real name is Alana Thompson, and her mother, June Shannon, were saying on audio clips, Boortz had no trouble making sense of the stars of TLC’s “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”
“Somebody squished a marshmallow in her face,” Boortz said of a Honey Boo Boo clip. After hearing Mom’s audio, Boortz said, “[She’s] looking to win a big jackpot and win a $1,000 in the pageant next week.”
Weiss, whose Atlanta-based syndicated show is heard in Atlanta on Q100, praised Boortz for being able to “redneckanize” the fellow Georgians’ comments.
“You haven’t spent 42 years listening to the callers I get,” Boortz responded.
Boortz reminded “The Bert Show” cast that he’s hosted about 10,500 radio shows and has 64 to go before ending his syndicated talk show on Jan. 21, 2013. He is heard locally on 95.5FM and AM750 News/Talk WSB from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays.
After retirement, Boortz said he plans to travel extensively, including eight months on “the Boortz bus”, riverboat tours of Europe, a month in Italy and a trip to Antarctica.
Former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain will replace Boortz after his retirement.
