A 49-year-old Central Florida woman was in critical condition Friday night after being attacked by an alligator in the Everglades.

Authorities say the alligator nearly took off the woman's right hand during the attack. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the woman was standing on a dock at a fish camp in the Everglades near Fort Lauderdale when she dropped a can and reached into the water to get it.

She was bitten by a 4- to 5-foot long alligator, authorities said.

A helicopter was dispatched to the fish camp shortly before 6:30 p.m. and the woman was flown to Broward Health North in Pompano Beach.

The woman’s name was not released Friday night.
