Instead of laughter, there was silence as Kate McKinnon, playing Hillary Clinton, opened this week's "Saturday Night Live" with an emotional performance of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
The solemn tribute to Cohen, who died Monday at age 82, doubled as a reaction to the aftermath of Tuesday's election. Protests continued across the country after President-elect Donald Trump delivered a stunning victory against Clinton, who had been favored to win in most polls.
At the end of the song, McKinnon's Clinton told viewers, "I'm not giving up, and neither should you. And live from New York, it's Saturday night!"
The episode was hosted by comedian Dave Chappelle, who returned to the spotlight more than a decade after he left "Chappelle's Show."
