A Central Florida man was arrested last week after deputies said he stole a dog from a pet store in order to buy crack.

Wayne Junior Barfield, 38, was seen by Largo Police on surveillance footage on Jan. 12 when he took a $1,600 Yorkshire terrier and stuffed it down his shirt before leaving the store, WTSP reports. Barfield was identified by police on Jan. 14 and was arrested the following day.

Police said Barfield told officers that he had exchanged the dog for crack and cash in St. Petersburg, and was not sure where the dog was, NBC Miami reports. Barfield also did not reveal who he sold the dog to, police added.

The dog was found on Jan. 20 and was returned to a vet, WTSP reports. The dog was sick, and doctors are not sure when it will be well enough to return to the pet store where a family already had purchased it to take home.
