A man, heartbroken after his dog’s devastating diagnosis, is giving his best friend the trip of a lifetime.
Robert Kugleris driving cross-country with his chocolate lab, Bella. Last May, Kugler took Bella to the vet for a shoulder injury. He was devastated when vets told him that shoulder injury was actually cancer. She was 9-years-old at the time.
"They said, 'This is the worst news I could give you; she has advanced osteosarcoma and it's already in her lungs so you need to either take her leg today or put her down,'" Kugler told WOWT.
Kugler decided to amputate Bella’s leg.
He had just finished school, so instead of starting work, he decided to travel with Bella.
Kugler, a Marine Vet, started by taking Bella to the Marine Corps Ball in Chicago, but the pair just kept travelling east.
“I feel like right now this is my purpose. It’s the chapter in my life right now is just exploring with my dog,” said Kugler.
Vets gave Bella just 6 months to live, but now it has already been 14 months.
