An Edinburg, Texas, man was arrested after deputies said he staged a kidnapping from his home to get away from his wife and party with friends.
Rogelio Andaverde, 34, was at his Edinburg-area home with his wife when two men wearing masks and carrying guns entered at 10:30 p.m. Oct. 1, 2013, and took Andaverde with them, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Maria Hernandez, his wife, called the authorities, "petrified" after seeing her husband's abduction.
"We took this incident very serious because of the circumstances described to us by the wife," Hidalgo County Sheriff Guadalupe Trevino said. "People don't just barge into your house and kidnap you for the hell of it."
Deputies said they looked for Andaverde for several hours, but the search was called off. Two days later, Andaverde returned home and told his wife that he had been released by his captors, but a follow-up investigation showed that the abduction was staged for him to "spend time with his friends and party."
"We have people file false reports all the time, and we put them in jail for it," Trevino told the San Antonio Express-News. "But I've never had someone do it just to get out of the house. I don't think his wife appreciated being kept until 4 or 5 in the morning, being interviewed by the cops while her husband was out doing who knows what with who knows who. He's going to have a lot of answering to do."
Andaverde was arrested and charged with making a false report to police.
