New Mexico resident John Wines thought he had hit it big when the scratch-off lottery ticket he bought at a Shell gas station in Roswell turned up five winning numbers  adding up to more than $500,000 in prizes.

But when Wines returned to station to collect, he was told the ticket was a "misprint" and would not be paid. (Source: KOB.com)

Really? A misprint? Wines said he contacted the New Mexico Lottery and they stuck to the misprint story in their response:

“We did find a flaw in that particular pack of tickets and it’s been reported to our printer. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I did complete a reconstruction of your ticket and it was not a winner.””

Wines said he recently retired and would have liked the $500,000, and the lottery’s offer of $100 in lottery tickets to make up for their error doesn’t seem fair since he “bought the ticket in good faith.”
