What started as "a little red spot" led to a Florida man losing his  leg, according to ABC 7.

Zach Mody had a small cut on his toe when he went swimming near Fort Myers. After he returned home, he saw some irritation. Then there were blood blisters. Then there was agonizing pain.

Doctors diagnosed his symptoms as a result of a flesh-eating bacteria. It took seven surgeries before doctors removed his leg.

Strangely enough, recent tests of the area where Mody went swimming showed no signs of dangerous levels of flesh-eating bacteria, which is common in the Gulf of Mexico.

One particular flesh-eating bactiera, vibrio vulnificus, thrives in warm salty water, which means Florida is a hotbed for it.
