A Florida man, in custody for hitting two dogs with a sledgehammer, told authorities that he was asked by his girlfriend to "put down the dogs because they were old," WTVT reports.

Tad Whitworth, 49, was accused of beating two dogs with a sledgehammer on Oct. 9. WFTS reports that witnesses told deputies that Whitworth attempted to bury the dogs because he thought they were dead. The dogs were taken to animal control with "multiple injuries" and "missing hair,"  but both are expected to recover, WTVT reports.

“Obviously, this is certainly not a way to euthanize elderly pets. The Polk County Sheriff's Office Animal Control facility is certainly here to help people with that type of situation,” Donna Wood, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office, told WFTS. “You do not take that into your own hands with a sledgehammer.”

Whitworth appeared in court on Sunday, WFTS said.
