Hundreds of people saw a fiery meteor fall to Earth early Tuesday morning, with several catching the spectacular image on video.

The American Meteor Society received more than 300 reports about the fireball, which occurred about 12:30 a.m.

"The fireball was seen primarily from Maine but witnesses from Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Ontario (Canada) and Québec (Canada) also reported the event," the AMS reports.

Michael Hankey, operations manager for AMS, said the fireball was a sporadic, random piece of space rock and not part of a known meteor shower.

“But it was a great one with awesome pictures and videos,” Hankey said.

A Portland, Maine police officer caught a stunning image of the fiery meteor falling to Earth on his cruiser’s dashcam.

This map from the American Meteor Society shows the location of people who reported seeing the meteor.
