Police in Chicago had a grim task, trying to find out what pushed a grandmother to allegedly kill her own grandchild.
WLS reported the 7-month-old girl was found with a woman identified as her grandmother. The child was dead with gashes to her throat, believed to have been made with a circular saw. The woman was alive, but had self-inflicted wounds.
An autopsy concluded that the baby was already dead when her throat was cut. It concluded that not only was the girl struck in the head with an object, but that she also likely suffocated on a sock that was "placed in her mouth," according to a county medical examiner's log that includes the infant's death. Chicago police told WLS they believe the woman was frustrated because the baby wouldn't stop crying.
The 57-year-old woman was taken to a hospital, in police custody. Records show the family had no previous problems with law enforcement.
