Being at a crime scene can be a horrific experience for anyone, but being a kid it can be the stuff of nightmares.
But one former prosecuting attorney in West Virginia is trying to bring a little comfort to children found in terrible circumstances.
Vickie Hylton, who is now in private practice, has started making child-sized quilts with the help of her mother for the county sheriff's department to wrap children in, The West Virginia Gazette Mail reported.
Hylton started sewing this past spring.
The quilts, which were first delivered to the Sheriff's Department this week, will be used when a child needs comforting, from an automobile accident to domestic violence calls, the Gazette Mail reported.
She also organized the donation of about 100 teddy bears to the sheriff's office for the same reason.
Capt. Jim Sizemore remembers one woman whose children were the beneficiaries of the teddy bears. He had responded to the woman's home on a domestic violence call.
The children still remember the kindness, 15 years later, the Gazette Mail reported.
"Their whole world is just destroyed, and you give them something soft and warm and cuddly to hold on to, they remember that," Sizemore said.
Hylton is now looking for more volunteers to make quilts. And you don't have to be an expert.
"So whether you can sew or not, you can still help with this program," Hylton said.
Anyone who wants to donate fabric, in at least a 3-yard increment, or by making quilts, you're being asked to call 304-574-0880.
