The 2013 Georgia Summer Food Service program kicks off at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Atlanta’s Grant Park. More than 116 program sponsors are expected to serve 3.5 million meals at 1,500 sites, according to Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. “Providing nutritious summer meals to children who would normally receive free breakfast or lunch during the school year is part of DECAL’s commitment to keeping Georgia’s children healthy,” DECAL Commissioner Bobby Cagle said. Non-profits and government organizations are reimbursed for providing free summer meals to eligible children, especially in low-income areas, Cagle said. Officials from the state Department of Education and Georgia Food Bank Association will be on hand for the kick-off.
