For his birthday Aug. 19, Ernest Andrus plans to hit the beach at St. Simons Island.

But it’s not the usual trip to the ocean. Andrus is a World War II Navy veteran, and his 93rd birthday will also be the culmination of a 2,600-mile run that began in San Diego, the Florida Times-Union reported.

His multi-year effort is to raise money to finance the return of a tank-landing ship — on which he served — to France in three years for a D-Day celebration, according to the report. Other runners are welcome to join his effort, with registration available online.

Andrus is no stranger to distance running. "I ran my first half marathon at 87," he told ABCNews.com last November.
