Before she died, Sylvia Wallace of Texas told her children she wanted to be buried in Cobb County, next to her mother.
But due to a funeral home mix-up, Wallace's body was placed in a casket and mourned by the wrong family, the Times Record News of Wichita Falls, Texas, reported. Wallace died April 13, but will not reach her final resting place in Smyrna until Saturday.
"I have been in the funeral business for over 20 years, and this has never happened," Falls Funeral Home director Rick Shaffer told the newspaper. "It was my mistake. I assumed he had the right lady in the casket."
Wallace's children had their mother exhumed six days later and have filed a lawsuit, according to the report.
"Their objective from the moment of their mother's death was to get her buried where she wanted, in Georgia," attorney Michael Payne said. "But we believe there have been rights violated. We are hopeful that this matter can be concluded quickly."
Another funeral home is in charge of bringing Wallace to Georgia for a Saturday burial.
