A $345,503 change order has been approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners to enlarge a maintenance facility at the new Veterans Park and make it a Recreation & Parks Agency north regional maintenance center.

The expanded project would join two existing facilities at the south end of Cherokee, allowing the county to divide the parks into three maintenance zones, according to a memo to the board from Recreation & Parks Director Bryan Reynolds.

Maintenance crews currently work out of a single facility at the southeast end of the county, Reynolds said. The expanded Veterans Park facility also eliminates the need to build a central maintenance facility budgeted at $720,000 in recreation impact fees.

“We believe this is a more cost-effective and efficient approach to maintaining the soon-to-be 23 county parks that are widely spread throughout our county,” Reynolds said. The 149-acre, $11.7 million Veterans Park is being constructed along Cumming Highway in northeast Cherokee.
