Almost half of the staff at a daycare center in Athens walked out Monday after they learned they would not receive their paychecks, according to a media report.

The situation at Little Ones Academy on Atlanta Highway prompted a division of the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning to investigate, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

The owner and remaining workers notified parents Monday they would have to pick up their children, the paper reported. The center was expected to reopen Tuesday with substitute personnel.

A delay in issuing federal funds could be part of the problem, according to the report.
