Union City police K9 honored at memorial service

March 8, 2017Union City police department’s K9 officer, Pluto, who died last year, was recently honored at the annual K9 Down Memorial Service.
Master Patrol Officer James Messer, who’s also a K9 handler, represented the Union City police department at the event in Porterdale, sponsored by the non-profit organization, We Ride to Provide. Pluto died from medical complications during a training event.
The Union City police department has a new K9. Riko, a Belgian malinois is trained in apprehension, tracking, searching, handler protection and narcotic detection. He recently assisted in a major drug bust.
