The University of Georgia will start a college of engineering that will open July 1, President Michael Adams said Thursday.

UGA has been growing its engineering programs for more than a decade and the college's approval by the University Council Thursday continues the expansion.

About 570 undergraduate and 55 graduate students are enrolled in these programs and those figures are projected to increase by as much as 150 percent over the next three to five years.

UGA has -- or will have -- students in 15 different engineering programs. The State Board of Regents narrowly approved three engineering degrees for UGA in 2010. The plan sparked statewide debate because Georgia Tech offers similar degrees. The regents unanimously approved UGA's new master's and Ph.D. engineering degrees in February.
