Snellville police on Saturday were investigating how thousands of documents containing people's personal information ended up in a dumpster behind a local strip mall.
Capt. Harold Thomas said that police received a report of the incident around 8 p.m. Friday after a viewer called in a tip to Channel 2 Action News but could not supply more detail.
"There's not a whole lot I can tell you right now," Thomas said. "Our officers haven't had a chance to go through it all."
Reporter Erica Byfield found the documents behind a strip mall near Scenic Highway then called police.
Although police said they didn't have a lot of information about the documents, the reporter said the paperwork contained credit card information, including three-digit security codes and checking account documents that listed both the account and routing numbers.
Thomas said investigators plan to go through the documents Monday morning to determine where they came from and who might be affected.
"We will be contacting people whose information was in there," he said.
