The man accused of killing an Athens-Clarke County police officer admitted in court Wednesday that he committed the crime, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Jamie Hood, who could face the death penalty in the case, said he fatally shot Senior Police Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian on March 22, 2011. Senior Police Officer Tony Howard was wounded in the incident. Hood surrendered on live television after a four-day manhunt.
"I took a man's life," Hood said, according to Channel 2. "I feel his family deserves to know the truth."
Wednesday's hearing concerned whether Hood's attorneys would get access to his family medical and juvenile records, the report said.
Hood tried once again to get his court-appointed attorneys removed from the case. He has repeatedly insisted that they are not representing him adequately.
"I do not want them to represent me," Hood said Wednesday. "They're hiding the truth from y'all. They want to put me in a mental hospital so I can't tell what really happened."
Clarke County Superior Court Judge David Sweat ordered Hood removed from the courtroom due to his outbursts. Hood was taken to another room to listen to the hearing through a speaker.
The next hearing is scheduled for July 30, Channel 2 said.
