Although he is still in a medically induced coma, Spalding Sheriff Dee Stewart is showing signs of improvement after a serious accident last week while on patrol.
Spalding Chief Deputy Teresa Bishop told the AJC on Tuesday that Stewart’s vital signs are improving five days after the accident left him in critical condition at Atlanta Medical Center.
“He’s progressing a little each day, and that's good,” said Bishop, who is in charge during the sheriff's absence.
The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. last Thursday when Stewart, on patrol in his sheriff’s Chevrolet Silverado pickup, pulled out of Moose Lodge Road onto Highway 19/41 in Griffin.
Stewart’s grandson, Spalding Deputy Chad Gasaway, was driving his personal Ford Explorer north on Highway 19/41 when he struck the sheriff as he was pulling out.
Stewart was taken by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center. Gasaway had minor injuries and has returned to duty after a brief absence while recuperating. He was off-duty at the time of the accident.
Bishop said law enforcement continues despite the sheriff’s absence. “He’s got a good command staff,” the chief deputy said. “Everybody’s carrying out their normal duties.”
Bishop said the sheriff’s family remains at his side. “They are holding up as best as they can and appreciate everyone’s prayers and concerns. They’ve got a lot of support.”
