An alleged social media threat targeting a Gwinnett County middle school has been "addressed," officials said.

Duluth Middle School Principal Deborah Fusi sent an email Thursday night alerting parents about the "social media posting that directed a threat toward our school."

"Earlier today we alerted our school resource officer and working together we have identified the students responsible for this post," Fusi wrote. "We take this kind of threat very seriously and will be taking appropriate disciplinary action with these students."

The exact nature of the alleged threat was unclear. A Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman declined to provide further information Friday morning.

"By the very nature of social media and how quickly things like this spread, it is likely that you or your child may have seen this posting or may encounter it," Fusi wrote in her email.

"That said, I would ask that you use this situation as a 'teachable moment' with your child(ren), reminding him or her about the responsibility we all have for items we post on social media. In addition, it is important for students to understand that the items they share can get them into trouble with the school and with police."
