Snellville’s police department collected a record 309 pounds of prescription drugs at a take-back event Saturday. The city’s last take-back event collected 230 pounds, according to police.

The event is designed to give residents a safe way to dispose of prescription drugs that would be dangerous in the hands of children and potentially abused by others.

“One participant was overheard stating that they did not know what to do with dangerous cancer drugs from a family member that passed away because they did not want it to fall into the wrong hands,” said Snellville Police Department Lt. A.L. Sullivan. “They were happy the police provide a method for safe disposal.”

Pharmacy students from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine were also present to assist with the event. The students distributed literature describing other methods to safely dispose of medication.
