Smyrna is the first city in Cobb County to approve extending health and other benefits to employees in legally recognized, same-sex marriages.
The council on Monday voted 5-2 to add the insurance benefits. Melleny Pritchett and Charles Welch voted against it.
Council member Wade Lnenicka, who sponsored the measure, said the vote will help the city recruit valuable employees by treating all employees equally. He said no employee had asked for the benefits.
Pritchett said Georgia doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages and Smyrna should wait until the federal government mandates an employee benefits extension.
