After an hour of deliberation in closed session on Monday night, Smithville school district board of trustees unanimously voted to appoint Tammie Hewitt as the new principal of Smithville Elementary School.
“Dr. McNulty and I are very excited about the opportunity to work with Mrs. Hewitt as the campus principal,” said Cheryl Burns, assistant superintendent. “She has an understanding of curriculum needs for grades K-5 along with her classroom experience.”
Hewitt replaced Denise Rogers, who accepted a position at Bastrop school district as the counselor at Red Rock Elementary.
“I am honored and excited to step into the role of principal at SES,” Hewitt said. “Our family has grown to truly love this community and I feel blessed to be a part of it.”
Hewitt has been with Smithville ISD for seven years – six of those as an administrator. She taught fifth grade for one year; served as the assistant principal at SES for three and a half years; and then at Brown Primary for the last two and a half years.
“I actually had the opportunity to start with these kids at Brown Primary and will get to continue with them through the next level. I am so excited to be a part of this journey and continue to watch them grow and learn,” she said. “I am eager to be involved in your child’s school life and look forward to our partnership in education.”
Smithville school district officials will be interviewing applicants throughout this week to fill the nine open positions that have become available during the summer break.
Recent resignations district-wide include — but not limited to — Ron Roth, Smithville High School principal; Shad Scharlach, SHS assistant principal; Kathy Craig, SHS counselor; Chelsi Young and Brianna Bonnet, teachers at SES; Patti Moore, teacher at Brown Primary; Jim Thompson, teacher at SHS.
After serving as the high school principal for one school year, Roth has accepted a position at Taylor ISD.
“It has been a privilege and a tremendous honor to serve the students at Smithville High School,” Roth stated in his resignation letter to the district. “It has been an exceptional time of professional growth due to the guidance and wisdom of Dr. McNulty and Mrs. Burns.”
The Smithville school board will hold a special meeting on Monday, July 28 to look at filling the openings.
