Sandy Springs continues to prepare for the eventual widening of Hammond Drive by acquiring its sixth property on the street.

The City Council recently approved spending $250,000 to buy a single-family home and its half-acre lot at 380 Hammond Drive. A purchase contract on file with the city identifies the seller as Virginia E. Duesenberg.

The city has spent nearly $2 million this year buying properties it intends to hold onto for the future street project. Three parcels have houses on them, and there has been talk of renting them in the interim to police officers and firefighters.

East of the Roswell Road commercial corridor to Glenridge Drive, Hammond is a heavily trafficked two-lane road with houses on both sides. Plans call for turning Hammond into a four-lane divided thoroughfare with sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
