Sandy Springs residents could see savings on their home insurance premiums after the Fire Department’s Insurance Service Office rating rose by one notch, to a Class 2 from a Class 3 rating.

The new ranking places the department among the top 2 percent of ISO-graded departments, city officials said. It is one of 1,060 departments in the U.S. and 36 in Georgia to receive a “2” rating.

Following criteria defined in National Fire Protection Association and American Water Works Association standards, ISO evaluates a community’s emergency communications, its distribution of fire companies in an area, and how well it tests its pumps and inventories each engine and ladder company’s equipment.

ISO also checks if a community has an adequate water supply for firefighting and its fire prevention practices. Sandy Springs was last audited by ISO in 2011.
