Fresh from its purchase of the Mimosa Hall antebellum mansion, Roswell is already experiencing the rigors of homeownership. The City Council recently approved spending more than $39,000 for a new roof and other upkeep.
A consultant recommended replacing the roof as soon as possible to protect the interior and exterior, a $35,990 job, according to a staff report to the council. The consultant also called for an inspection by the Fire Marshal to identify smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers that may need to be replaced, $2,000; and installation of a 6-mil vapor barrier over exposed earth in the basement to prevent moisture infiltration, $1,500.
Mimosa Hall dates to 1840. Roswell paid $2.95 million this summer to acquire the 6,300-square-foot home and its 9-acre site at 127 Bulloch Ave. The city has budgeted $100,000 a year to maintain the property. A nonprofit group, Friends of Mimosa Hall and Gardens, has been formed to raise funds for renovations.
