The Roswell City Council has indicated it’s fine with people “brown bagging” their own alcohol to city restaurants, and with sidewalk cafes selling alcoholic beverages from the cafe area during permitted special events.
The Council voted on first reading to eliminate from its alcohol code a prohibition against diners bringing their own alcohol into an eatery, with a few exceptions.
A restaurant could, if it wishes, allow a patron to bring one unopened bottle of alcohol for consumption on the premises, provided the establishment does not itself serve or sell the alcohol, and that it establishes a policy for permitting the practice. The measure is to return to the Council for a second and final vote Dec. 12.
Separately, the Council passed a resolution authorizing sidewalk café licensees in good standing to sell alcoholic beverages from the café during city special events.
The resolution said Roswell “encourages economic development and a sense of community through permitting special events,” and that the mayor and Council have determined such alcohol sales “will encourage economic development and benefit current business establishments.”
