The Roswell City Council has voted to accept a 2018-19 AmeriCorps grant of $89,709 to fund after-school programming at four Title I Fulton County schools.
The city, Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA and the STAR House Foundation will work as partners to enhance after-school offerings at Esther Jackson, Hembree Springs, Mimosa and Vickery Mill elementary schools, city staff said in a report to the council.
The federal grant, from the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism, will require a $39,748 match from the city. “The grant funds will deliver rigorous academics, STEM instruction and fitness/nutritional programs to 326 K-5 students during the 2018-19 school year,” staff said.
“Part-time Roswell AmeriCorps members will work with teachers and instructional leaders to provide additional instruction and homework support to students,” staff said. “Members will receive workforce readiness training and develop communications, teaching and leadership skills.”
Twenty individuals will be hired and 30 volunteers, recruited for the program.
